OSSTF/FEESO District 35, Algoma University vote in favour of taking strike action

The members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) District 35, Algoma University have voted 96 per cent in favour of taking strike action if necessary to reach their contract goals.

"The University refuses to recognize the value of their employees in a meaningful way. Despite significant compensation increases for other employee groups, the employer refuses to consider any increases for the support staff. Across the province, a pattern of settlements has clearly indicated that other employers in the university sector are doing what they can to achieve fair and reasonable settlements. We have a right to expect the same here," said Michael Young, President of the bargaining unit.

"A strike mandate of 96 per cent should send a clear message to the University—if you value the work of this group of employees, it's time to come to the table with a mandate to negotiate, otherwise there will be job action," added Paul Elliott, OSSTF/FEESO provincial Vice President and Chair of the OSSTF/FEESO District 35, Algoma University bargaining team.
