Nipissing part-time faculty settlement

Nipissing part-time faculty settlement

Like a number of other universities across Ontario, Nipissing University recently negotiated (with the aid of a provincial Conciliation Officer) an agreement with its part-time faculty that includes, along with other improvements to the collective agreement, monetary increases in each year of a four-year agreement.

Article 21: Compensation

·         across the board scale increases: 1%, 1%, 2%, 2% (Year 1 retroactive to May 1, 2010)

·         market adjustment for per-course stipend: +$250 in year 3; +$304 in year 4

Effective Rate for year three looks to be about 6.75% (2% + $250)

Effective Rate for year four looks to be about 7.44% (2% + $304)

This is just one more in a long line of settlements at other universities, and elsewhere in the broader public sector, indicating that employers who truly wish to be “fair and equitable” with their workers are not willing to unjustly penalize those workers simply because a non-binding government policy asks them to do so.

As you know, we will be entering Conciliation on February 17, and we are hoping that the presence of an objective third party will help the University understand that a fair and equitable settlement does not include a 0% salary increase.

We will continue to keep you posted if there are any developments between now and our Conciliation date.
